Ceramic Residency at Gresham School

Gresham’s is an independent HMC school (boarding and day) set in a very attractive part of North Norfolk. There are about 490 boys and girls aged 13-18 with approximately 200 in the Sixth Form. There is an associated Preparatory School of some 220 pupils and a Pre Prep School of 120.

The Art Department staff currently consists of two full time and four part time teachers. In addition there are two shared technicians. The department is housed in the Cairns Centre, purpose-built in 1990, the building is shared with the Design Technology department so art students have easy access to a range of tools and machinery. The Art Department consists of seven studio spaces, with a darkroom and separate printmaking area with a large etching press. One studio is a dedicated drawing studio, where weekly life drawing classes are held for sixth form students. Sixth form art students are allocated individual studio spaces and are encouraged to be ambitious and independent in the planning of their work. Photography is a popular option in the sixth form and this takes place in a dedicated studio. This summer holiday, a large kiln is to be installed and one studio converted into a ceramics studio.

It is central to the philosophy of the department that the studios remain open well beyond timetabled lessons so that students can pursue their interests in their own time.

The department is also home to the Nicholson Gallery. This is an important part of the department, open to the public, it houses regularly changing exhibitions of the work of a range of artists, which provide interest and inspiration for the students. It also provides a venue for the exhibition of students’ work. Examples of students’ work and exhibitions in the Gallery can be seen on the School’s website: www.greshams.com

The department is looking to appoint a Ceramicist in Residence for the academic year September 2010 to June 2011, which will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to develop their own practice in a thriving art department.

A studio space and generous materials allowance will be provided.

There will be an expectation to run workshops, becoming involved with teaching and the development of pupils’ work. The successful candidate will present an exhibition of their work during the Summer term in the Nicholson Gallery. Additionally, they will produce a piece of ceramics to display on the external wall of the Cairns Centre, in collaboration with pupils and be invited to write a blog to communicate their ideas and experience with pupils.

There will also be an expectation to teach the adult life drawing classes we offer to the local community and contribute to some pupil life drawing sessions.

All meals and accommodation within the School will be provided. There will be salary of £1000 per term.

Applicants should email applications to Charley Openshaw, Head of Art: copenshaw@greshams.com by 21st May 2010.

Applications should include an application form (available from www.greshams.com), images of recent work and a covering letter. Images may be submitted on a CD by post.
